Anaheim Leaders to Hold District Elections Press ConferenceWednesday, Jan. 8

Leaders to Respond to Lawsuit Settlement Reports

What: Press Conference on Anaheim voting districts developments

Who: Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, Citizens Advisory Committee members, lawsuit plaintiffs, 100+ community residents (Spanish & English speakers)

When: Wednesday, January 8 at 11 AM

Where: Anaheim City Hall (outside front steps)

200 S. Anaheim Blvd Anaheim, CA 92805

Why: In what would be a major step toward the adoption of local voting districts, the OC Registerand Voice of OC are reporting a likely settlement in the lawsuit between the ACLU and the City of Anaheim over the city’s at-large election system.

At Tuesday’s council closed session, Mayor Tom Tait and the Anaheim City Council are expected to agree a framework that will put the issue of district elections to voters on the November 2014 ballot.

The settlement means Anaheim residents could elect representatives to City Hall from their own neighborhoods as soon as 2016, potentially ending the current, antiquated system that was designed to serve a smaller, more homogeneous city. Rather then continuing a practice that required all candidates to be elected citywide, voters will now have the opportunity for local representation.
